Have You Heard…
January 25, 2010
by Maria Ibâñez

Greetings, a see saw week for us here in Miami. Work, meetings, dinners, invitations, all very exciting but, and you know there is always a but, there’s the dealing with the illness of our beloved miniature pinscher, Bibi. She has been our constant companion for almost 14 years, has gone on cross country band trips with the boys high school band, was there at Parris Island when they graduated boot camp and earned the title “Marine” and is such a big part of our family that we are all besides ourselves with grief at seeing her this ill and knowing her time for rest is coming. At this writing she is hospitalized on IVs and under observation because her sugar levels are very high but all her other readings are really low and she has been convulsing….too much to relay but I wanted you to know why I sound a little down in tone in this issue.

Thursday was a wonderful day! I picked up Simone and Valerie at the Port of Miami when they returned with the Creativity at Sea cruise, and we were able to spend a few hours together driving downtown Miami, showing them the sights. We drove throughout South Beach and had a lovely lunch at an outdoor café on the famous Lincoln Road Mall. I was saddened to have to take my friends to the airport at 1:30 to catch their flight and was upset when their flight was delayed and they didn’t actually get out until after 5:00 in the afternoon. Think of all the fun we could have had during those hours! Oh, well, all that means is we’ll have to plan on something together real soon.

Subscription requests keep pouring in weekly both for the weekly Have you Heard? and for The Magic Touch. I know it may sound repetitive, but, I have to thank you, the readers, for helping to spread the word on them and for sending all the news items you wish to share. Please remember to send all items to me at merlina17@aol.com.

Until next time..….keep a dream in the making for you create your tomorrows by what you dream today.

DIRK LOSANDER AND THE CHILDREN IN CAR ACCIDENT

Dirk Losander, with the children in the vehicle, were hit by a drunk driver who ran through a traffic light. The children were treated and released after spending the night in the hospital, however, Losander remains hospitalized and is to undergo foot surgery before he can be discharged. Our thoughts and prayers, as I am sure are yours, go out to the family for a full and as speedy as possible recovery.

JEFF MC BRIDE AND WONDERGROUND A COMPLETE SUCCESS

Jeff Mc Bride continues to garner success with the Wonderground Show in Las Vegas. Last week he had two ladies performing, Charlotte Pendragon and Circe Martinez. Charlotte is known and loved by all and requires little if any introduction; Circe is a Cuban born performer who started out as a dancer in Cuba but being the daughter of a magician soon incorporated magic into her act as well. She is currently performing regularly in Las Vegas as a magic clown and is very much in demand for her services at birthday parties. A very talented magician, Circe has a wonderful dove act which has won her much praise. To see the video please follow the below link.

S.A.M. ACCEPTING SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS
Message from Warren Kaps

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED FOR 2010

Applications are now being accepted for the 2010 summer season for full tuition scholarships plus travel expense to attend magic camp at either Tannen’s Magic Camp at their location in Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania, for the week of July 10 to July 17, 2010, or the Sorcerer’s Summer Safari located near Toronto in Haliburton, Ontario, Canada, for the week of August 31 to September 5, 2010. The scholarships are made possible by a grant from the Society of American Magicians Magic Endowment Fund, which has provided scholarships to youngsters between the

ages of 12 to 18 years for the past 19 years.

The Magic Endowment Fund realizes that involvement in the magical arts can make a crucial difference in the lives of youngsters in their formative years. They develop magical skills that can help provide a positive mental attitude and a sense of accomplishment and achievement that can last their entire life. Magic camp is a wonderful place for youngsters to learn new skills and improve their performance in a convivial setting. Many magic campers have gone on to become full-time performers and all have been a credit to the magical arts.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate talent and dedication to a magical performing arts discipline and financial need. Applications may be obtained by either writing to the S.A.M. Magic Endowment Fund, 15 Warren Street, Hackensack, NJ 07601, or by email, stating your mailing address, to Warren@kapsbarto.com. A copy of the application may also be downloaded from the S.A.M. website, http://www.magicsam.com

THE DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS IS MAY 15, 2010

JARED SHERLOCK — SHOW MIXES STUDENT’S LOVE OF THEATER AND MAGIC

ST. JOSEPH, MO— When Jared Sherlock was a child playing twilight games such as flashlight tag, kick the can and ghosts in the graveyard, the magic of imagination was inescapable.

“You have this ferocious sense of play, and you don’t care what else is going on,” said Sherlock, an Indianapolis native studying theater and entrepreneurship at St. John’s University. “You don’t have all these obligations. You’re just playing hide-and-seek with flashlights, but for you, you’re creating this whole world using your imagination.”

MARCO TEMPEST — AUGMENTED REALITY

Imagine having a magic mirror that could give you and your clients the ability to pass into any environment – real or fictional, at any time in the present past or futurewhat is inside? Or draw on the mirror with just your finger tip, and have your drawing (chart, graph…whatever) immediately spring to life. What wonders could you perform with such a magical technology? How would it affect your next major sales meeting, product launch or general session meeting? These are just the questions Marco Tempest asked himself – and then set out to answer. The answer he created is Projected Augmented Reality.
